Classified Jobs 

Employment that usually pays an hourly rate. Employee job duties are routine; following a specific set of standards and rules. 

Examples: Secretary, Accountant, Social Service Worker

 
Classified Positions Hiring Process:
  • The Personnel Review Commission (PRC) will review your application to make sure you meet the minimum qualifications.
  • If you do, the PRC will invite you to take a civil service examination. Everyone who passes the exam goes on an eligibility list.
  • The PRC sends the hiring department and Human Resources (HR) a certified eligibility list with the top 25% candidates (or at least the ten highest scoring candidates, whichever is greater). HR helps the hiring department decide who from the certified list to follow up with for interviews and then whom to offer a job to.

 

 

 

 

 

Unclassified Jobs

Employment that usually pays a salary or commission. People employed in the unclassified service serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and make independent decisions. 

Examples: HR Manager, Legal Account Clerk 3, Title Clerk

 
Unclassified Positions Hiring Process:
  • Human Resources will review your application to make sure you meet the minimum qualifications.
  • HR assists the hiring department decide who to follow up with for interviews and then whom to offer a job to.
Unclassified positions DO NOT require a civil service test or eligibility list.
 

 

Noncompetitive Classified

Positions that require exceptional qualifications of a scientific, professional, educational, or managerial character or those where it is impractical to develop and administer competitive examinations.

Examples: Custodial Worker, Forensic Pathologist, Administrator, Social Program 5 

 

Non-competitive Classified Positions Hiring Process:

  • The Personnel Review Commission (PRC) will review your application to make sure you meet the minimum qualifications.
  • If you do, the PRC will add you to the eligibility list.
  • The PRC sends the hiring department and Human Resources (HR) a certified eligibility list of all candidates that met the requirements. HR helps the hiring department decide who from the certified list to follow up with for interviews and then whom to offer a job to.
  • If offered a position, you will receive a start date upon successfully completing your pre-employment examinations.
All non-competitive classified jobs will automatically be place on eligibility list after minimum requirements are met.
